Bella and Godwin Baxter’s world tour

Poor Things

Bella and Godwin Baxter’s world tour is both an educational journey and an attempt to alter the terms of their intense attachment. Bella proposes the trip to draw Godwin away from his dogs; in retrospect, she understands that he also uses it to extend her knowledge and to get rid of her. The journey broadens her medical education, but it does not loosen her hold on him.

A journey proposed by Bella

Bella initiates the tour because she wants to get Godwin away from his dogs. Godwin accepts, but her later account revises the apparent simplicity of that decision: he means to extend her knowledge while also securing relief from her constant company. Their motives overlap without being the same. The trip takes them through fourteen capital cities, where they visit hospitals and attend medical lectures.

Medical education and sexual knowledge

The tour gives Bella direct access to medical instruction. In Vienna, a specialist teaches her the most modern techniques of sexual hygiene and birth control. Afterward, Godwin repeatedly pushes her into the company of other men whenever he can. The sequence places formal instruction about sexual life beside Godwin’s efforts to redirect Bella’s desire, but her account makes clear that experience and knowledge do not produce the emotional separation he appears to seek.

Attachment and return to Glasgow

Bella describes her sensual appetite as strong, yet says she cannot or will not separate it from her moral appetite for what she admires. Godwin remains the person she most admires, and she returns from the tour unwilling to divide her attraction between him and others. Back in Glasgow, she lets him do nothing and go nowhere without her. She is more cheerful than he is: although she cannot make him wholly hers through marriage, she takes comfort in having more of his company than anyone else can claim. The journey has widened her knowledge while leaving their unequal, mutually painful attachment intact.

The tour’s narrative turning point

The tour ends in Glasgow, where Bella and Godwin meet Archibald McCandless again while walking by the memorial fountain in West End Park. This encounter reconnects the journey to the relationships and conflicts surrounding Godwin. In Bella’s retrospective telling, the trip is therefore not a clean departure from their earlier life: it returns them to Glasgow with her education enlarged, her attachment undiminished, and the same intimate tensions still in place.
